Mahadevi Akka, the girl who married Lord Mahadeva Shiva

Akka Mahadevi is to Shiva what Mira Bai was to Lord Krishna. Akka Mahadevi has fallen in love with Shiva who posseses an alluring body that is as Goswami Tulasi Das puts it "Karpur-Gauram" or "White as Camphor".

Akka Mahadevi was born in Karnataka in the 12th Century. She left her husband as he tried to get intimate with her as she had already accepted Lord Shiva as her husband. She left the house naked and never wore anything in her life.

Here are lines translated in English from a poem originally written in Kannada by Akka Mahadevi:

For hunger, there is the village rice in the begging bowl,
For thirst, there are tanks and streams and wells
For sleep temple ruins do well
For the company of the soul I have you, Chenna Mallikarjuna
- Mahadevi  Akka

May the example of Akka Mahadevi light the spark of love for Lord Shiva, whose Tandava animates the cosmos, in our hearts!
