How the Shakti Peethas came into existence

Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva jumped into the yagya fire after her husband was insulted by her father Daksha. Shiva was so angry and grief strucken that he carried her body in his arms and danced his fearsome tandava dance.

Every spot where a body part of Mata Sati fell became a Shakti Peetha - a place where the Mother Goddess is worshipped with rituals as old as time.

Worshiping Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in Muslim Indonesia

Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are present in a cave in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, in the form of three lingas that are venerated by the local Hindus. The cave is called Goa Gajah. Goa, which is pronounced Guha, is cave in Sanskrit and Gajah is elephant.

There was a time when Indonesia, which is now a Muslim country except for the island of Bali, used to be predominantly Hindu. To this day, there are Hindu temples across the country.

Bali, however, remains staunchly Hindu and there also have been several instances of Muslims embracing Hinduism in the country.

May the three Lords - Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha - of Guha Gajah - bless us with pride in the traditions of Sanatan Hindu Dharma!

Shri Radhe Maa - Kalbhairava, the supreme court of ancient Nepal

The 12-foot Kalabhairava idol at Hanuman Dhoka in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal was discovered by king Pratap Malla in the Seventeenth Century. It is believed that anyone who lies before this idol dies.

Therefore locals when they wished to settle disputes, often sought the intervention of Lord Kalbhairava, who presided as the chief judge.

Kalbhairava is a fierce aspect of Lord Shiva.

May Lord Kalbhairava, the fierce Lord of Kathmandu bless all his devotees with strength, wisdom and love for all beings!

Jai Baba Kalbhairav! Har Har Mahadev!

Trailanga Swami, the ferocious tiger and the king of Nepal

The king of Nepal was not able to shoot a tiger despite repeated attempts. He chased the tiger into thick bushes and with his gun ready, he proceeded cautiously. He heard a deep growl and walked in that direction. He saw the terrified tiger sitting at the feet of a naked sadhu. The Sadhu was patting the roaring tiger.

"Fear not, o king. The tiger intends no harm. Everything has been created by God. When you love, you are loved in return. Always, bear this in mind," said the calm yogi.

The yogi was none other than Trailanga Swami (1607-1887), who was known as Living Shiva of Benaras.

Har Har Mahadev! Jai Trailanga Swami!

May we be fortunate to lay our heads in worshipful reverence at the lotus feet of Trailanga Swami, the leading among Shiva-bhaktas!

Lord Dakshinamurti - Mahadeva as the supreme guru

Lord Shiva

The four sons of Lord Brahma, Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana, and Sanat Kumara were blessed with great intellects and were also learned in the sacred Vedas. However, despite this they were unable to understand the nature of God, the supreme power.

After seeking many teachers, devatas and rishis, they finally came to Lord Shiva who sat silently under a Banyan tree and with one foot on the ground and the other folded under his other pressed under the other leg, gazed at the four seekers.

In that silence, all the knowledge of the world was passed on to the four. Lord Shiva is called Dakshinamurti in this aspect. He is the highest among the teachers.

May the ever youthful Lord Daskshinamurti who dispels all doubts of seekers and returns them to the bliss of Sadchidananda bless us all!

How Shiva and Shakti became one as Ardhanareshwar

Rishi Bhringi, a great devotee of Shiva could not bring himself to worship Devi Parvati, because he had no place in his heart for any deity other than Shiva. When all rishis and devatas gathered at Mount Kailasa to worship the divine pair, Bhringi ignored Mata Parvati, who is Aadi Shakti. Devi withdrew her powers from Bhringi and thus Shakti-less, Bhringi fell down as he was unable to stand. Moved by his devotee's plight, with Shiva's blessings, the assembled Devas and Rishis gave Bhringhi the power to stand.

Mata Parvati, then performed great austerities and compelled Shiva to embrace her so completely that their selves merged and the Ardha-Nareshwara form of Shiva manifested. Thereafter, anyone who worships Lord Shiva is known also to worship the Goddess Shakti who is not separate from him. Rishi Bhringi learned his lesson and became wiser due to the experience.

The Lord's Ardhnareshwara form also reminds us that God is beyond gender, and because the individual soul is but an image of the Supreme Soul, we are also taught that whether male or female - within we are both male and female. Also, the soul is gender-less.

May Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati in their Ardhanareshwara form bless us with complete acceptance of the male as well as female energies within us. May we come closer to the supreme truth, which is gender-less!

Har Har Mahadev! Jai Maa!

Shri Radhe Maa - How Lord Shiva came to wear the crescent moon

Daksha cursed his son-in-law Lord Chandra or Moon that he would eventually become smaller and wane away because he did not treat all his wives equitably. Chandra prayed to the Somnatha linga, the first of the Jyotir Lingam and was blessed by a boon that he would honor Daksha's curse and also be released from its ill-effects. The moon would wane away in the Krishna Paksha and Wax in the Shulka Paksha.

Lord Shiva being all-merciful also honored his devotee by placing his on his head.

Lord Shiva who has countless forms is beyond form, name and gunas and is yet the base from which all names, forms and qualities arise. He wears the Moon, which waxes and wanes. The Moon like everything in nature waxes and wanes. Everything in life moves in cyclical fashion. That which does not change us Shiva.
