Thailand is still ruled by Rama

Thailand is ruled by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, whose official name is Rama XI. The name 'Rama' indeed refers to Lord Rama, the king of Ayodhya, the husband of Sita. While the royal family of Thailand is Buddhist, the Ramayana is held in great reverance by all Thai people and Maryadapurshottam Lord Rama is lauded as the ideal King.
The Thai Ramayan is called Ramakien. It is the national epic of Thailand.

Such is the reverence that the Thai royal family have for the Ramayana that in 1989, Sanskrit scholar Satyavrat Shastri was asked to translate the Ramakien into a Sanskrit poem, which went on to win over 10 national and international awards.
