When Lord Rama gave darshan to a Muslim King

Kancherla Gopanna, a devotee of Lord Rama, was building a temple on the banks of the Godavari River dedicated to his Ishta. The Sultan charged him with misuse of public funds from the royal treasury of  Qutub Shahi Sultan Abul Hassan Tana Shah in the 17th Century.  The Sultan imprisoned Gopanna at the Golconda Fort. Gopanna, a great devotee and poet, wrote and sang songs dedicated to the lord and sought his grace. After Gopanna had spent 12 years in prison Lord Rama approached the king in disguise and settled the debt in gold coins.

Gopanna was released and the sultan who understood that something special had happened made arrangements for the upkeep of the temple. The King returned all the money to the temple. After the Shah, the territory came under the control of the Nizams of Hyderabad who continued to keep the tradition alive by gifting pearls to the temple every year.

This tradition is kept alive by the state government of Andhra Pradesh who gift pearls to the temple every year on Rama Navami.
