What is Amavasya

Amavasya is the name given to a new moon night according to the Hindu mythology. It is the first night of the first quarter of the lunar month.

Since the moon is not visible on the day, Amavasya is also referred as No Moon night. Many people in India choose this day to make an offering to their dead ancestors.

There is also an ongoing debate whether Amavasya is auspicious or inauspicious.

The Significance of Bhai Dooj

Diwali, the festival of lights, is a five day long celebrations.

The 5th or the last day of diwali is Bhaiya Dooj, popularly known as Bhai Dooj. The reason why this festival is known as bhai dooj is that it falls on the second day after the new moon that is the ‘Dooj’ day. And it is a day to pray for the long life of the brother, which is referred as “bhayya or bhai”.

According to religious scriptures, Yamaraj, the God of death, went to visit his sister's house after a long period of separation. His sister, Yami was very happy to see him and welcomed him by putting an auspicious mark on his forehead for his welfare. Yami and Yamraj then shared a meal. He was so pleased with his sister's reception, he proclaimed that every year, on the dooj day, if a sister puts a tilak on her brother's forehead, then no one can harm her brother. Till date, this tradition is followed. Sisters perform puja for their brother’s safety and well being. Brothers in return give gifts to their sisters as a token of love.

The festival of Diwali is incomplete without bhai dooj. It is referred as “Bhaiyya-Duj” in the Hindi-speaking belt, “Bhav--Bij” in the Marathi-speaking communities, "Bhai fota" in Bengal and "Bhai-Tika" in Nepal.

Lakshmi Puja on Diwali

The third day of Diwali festival is the most important for Lakshmi puja and is entirely devoted to the propitiation of Goddess Lakshmi. On this very day sun enters his second course and passes Libra which is represented by the balance or scale. Hence, this design of Libra is believed to have suggested the balancing of account books and their closing. Despite the fact that this day falls on an amavasya day it is regarded as the most auspicious.

The day of Lakshmi-Puja falls on the dark night of Amavasya. The strains of joyous sounds of bells and drums float from the temples as man is invoking Goddess Laxmi in a wondrous holy "pouring-in" of his heart. All of a sudden that impenetrable darkness is pierced by innumerable rays of light for just a moment and the next moment a blaze of light descends down to earth from heaven as golden-footed Deep-Lakshmi alights on earth in all her celestial glory amidst chantings of Vedic hymns.

Lakshmi Puja consists of a combined puja of five deities: Ganesha is worshiped at the beginning of every auspicious act as Vighnaharta; Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped in her three forms - Mahalakshmi (the goddess of wealth and money), Mahasaraswati (the goddess of books and learning), and Mahakali; Kuber (the treasurer of the gods) is also worshiped.

Navratri Celebrations in West Bengal

The East Indian state of West Bengal celebrates Navratri as Durga Puja with much splendor and glitter. A literal visit to the capital city during Durga Puja is `a must watch` in one’s lifetime.

This festival is essentially religious in nature. Celebrated with true devotion, huge idols of the Goddess Durga posed as killing the demon Mahishasura are worshipped everywhere in West Bengal. Huge 'pandals' are set up everywhere and devotees in large numbers visit to worship Goddess Durga. Men, women and children all dressed up in new clothes visit different ‘pandals’ to offer prayers to the Mother Goddess.

The Goddess is seen in her most dynamic form, beautiful and fearsome invoking awe and bhakti in her devotees. On the fifth day or the tenth day of the festivity the beautifully crafted clay idols are immersed in the river.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF NAVRATRI- PART ONE

According to Hindu calendar, Navratri comes 5 times in a year, while two out of those five Navratris are celebrated as festivals, which comes in Ashwin month and Chaitra month. Five Navratris are as follows:

1. Chaitra Navratri : Chaitra Navratri comes in Chaitra month according to Hindu Calendar. This Navratri is also known as Vasanti Navratri because of the season Vasant (spring, in month March-April). This Navratri is celebrated as Navratri Festival. On its 9th day, birthday of Lord Ram is celebrated. This Navratri is also known as Bodhan Navratri, because Goddess is awakened at this time.

2. Ashadi Gupta (Secret) Navratri: Ashadi Navratri is Gupta or Secret Navratri in which saadhak (devotee) perform very special rituals to attain some siddhi. Generally, this Navratri is not for all common people. Ashadi Navratri starts from 1st day of waxing moon of Ashad month and ends on 9th day of waxing moon of Ashad month (June-July month).

3. Shardiya Navratri : Shardiya Navratri is celebrated as annual festival. Shrdiya Navratri comes in Ashwin month, Sharad Ritu. It is also known as Shayan Navratri, because this the time of sleeping of Mother Goddess.

Navratri Celebrations in Andhra Pradesh

The nine-day festival of Navratri, or Navarathri, in Hindu religion dedicated to the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga. `Navarathri" is a major Hindu festival, which is celebrated during `Dussehra` or `Navarathri` throughout India, especially in Southern India.

Andhra Pradesh, women arrange 'Bommai Kolu', a special placing of dolls decorated with flowers and ornaments on specially prepared steps. Nine young 'kanyas' are offered new clothes and sweets. The married women share flowers, kumkum and snacks among themselves.
Apart from the traditional Navrathri; Bommai Kolu display, nowadays there is an emphasis on Golu themes with different ideas.

During this festival, a mini-exhibition of toys and dolls are set up in many Hindu homes. The origin of this unique festival is not known clearly but it is said that it existed at least for the past five hundred years i.e. from the days of the Vijayanagar kings of Hampi in Karnataka. The reference of the festival `Navarathri Kolu` is found in the inscriptions of these kings. The Tanjavur Maharaja Sarfoji`s Saraswathi Mahal Library old Marathi record mentions that dolls representing eighteen different castes were supplied at that time. This proves its antiquity. Even the royal families of the Tanjavur and Pudukkottai kingdoms of Tamil Nadu used to celebrate the `Navaratri Kolu` festival in a very grand manner.

Shri Radhe Maa -Shobha yatra

Shri Radhe Maa -Shobha Yatra

Devotees of Mamtamai Shri Radhe Maa across the world are looking forward to a big event in the days ahead  – 31st March 2012. This is when Devi Maa’s devotees in Punjab attend a grand Shobha Yatra (Glory Procession) at the Shakti Peetha Devi Talab Mandir in Jalandhar, India.

The temple, which is located a kilometer from Jalandhar railway station, is in the heart of the city. The presiding deity of the Devi Talab Mandir temple is Maa Kali in her aspect as Tripuramalini who rules the city with her consort Lord Shiva who is present as Bhishan Bhairav.

The puranas state that Maa Sati immolated herself after her father Daksha insulted her husband Lord Shiva.  This enraged Lord Shiva who opened his terrifying third eye and danced a fierce tandava across the earth with the body of his beloved Sati in his arms.

The gods afraid that the Lord’s anger would destroy the universe sought the assistance of Lord Vishnu who dispatched his all-powerful discus – Sudarshan Chakra – to cut Sati’s body into pieces.  Every spot that received a portion of Maa Sati’s body became in the ages that followed a place of worship for devotees of the Goddess. Each of these spots is honoured as a Shakti Peetha by devotees of the Goddess who are also referred to as Shaktas. The Devi Talab Mandir has the distinction of being one of the 51 prominent Shakti Peethas on the subcontinent. The temple marks the spot that was blessed with Maa Sati’s right breast.

The venue of the Shobha Yatra is special for Mamtamai Shri Radhe Maa who recommends the worship of Lord Shiva and Maa Jagadambika as the supreme antidote for all ills worldly as well as spiritual, and is herself a committed devotee of Devi and Lord Shiva. The Shobha Yatra is also special for sevadars of Mamtamai Shri Radhe Maa who are also devotees of Maa Parashakti and Lord Shiva enshrined in the Devi Talab Mandir as Shri Tripuramalini and Bhishan Bhairav.
Shri Radhe Maa - Shobha Yatra

Please be present at the Shobha Yatra procession and benefit from the boundless mercy of Maa Uma who never fails those who serve her with love and devotion. Jai Mata Di.
