Pavahari Baba and the thief who became a sadhu

A thief entered the kutia of Pavahari Baba, a great saint and devotee of Lord Ramachandra, who lived in the 19th century. As he made a bundle, Pavahari Baba woke up. The thief began running leaving stolen bundle behind but Pavahari Baba was faster. He caught up with the thief and offered him the bundle, and said, 'My God, please keep what you have taken.' The thief was too shocked for words and fell at the feet of the saint.

With the blessings of Pavahari, the thief became a sadhu and gradually gave up the ways of the world and became a sanyasi. Swami Vivekananda, was a great devotee of Pavahari and even considered accepting as a guru.

Babaji taught that one should lay like a dog at the feet of the guru if one wishes to progress in spiritual life.

The significance of Sankashti Chaturthi

According to the Hindu calendar, every lunar month has two chaturthi tithis. One is after the full moon which falls during Krishna Paksha which is also known as Sakashti Chaturthi. The second Chaturthi falls on the new moon day during the Shukla Paksha which is known as Vinayaka Chaturthi.

If Sankashti Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is celebrated as Angarki Chaturthi. Angarki Chaturthi is considered to be very auspicious and holy according to the Hindu mythology. Fasts are also observed on Sankashti Chaturthi mostly in the northern and western regions of India.

The Hindu calendar and its significance

 The Hindu calendar is most commonly known as “Panchang” or “Panjika” and it is based on the movements of the moon. 

It is considered as an important part in the life of a Hindu. It consists of auspicious dates, times and information about various Hindu festivals.

 Reference to the Panchang calendar is found in Rig Veda dated back to the 2^nd millennium BC.

 The month of Poush also known as Paush Mahina in the northern parts of India starts after the Margashrisha Mahina. The Paush Mahina for the year 2012-13 starts from 29^th December ’12 and ends on the 27^th of January 2013.

The Paush Navaratri or Shakambari Navaratri is one of the most important festivals in the month of Paush in North India. 

It is celebrated in states like Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Orissa, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The significance of Datta Jayanti

Datta Jayanti is a popular Hindu festival celebrated all over India. As it is the day of the birth of Lord Datta. This festival is celebrated in the Hindu month of Margashirsha on a full moon day. Lord Datta was believed to be the son of Lord Brahma according to Hindu mythology.

Datta means one who has attained final liberation. A pooja is organized by the devotees for Lord Datta. This is done by following the basic steps of Hindu holy worship which includes cleaning the premises, cleansing oneself, and preparation of prasad, etc.

After performing the pooja of Lord Datta, prasad is distributed to everyone.

What is Amavasya

Amavasya is the name given to a new moon night according to the Hindu mythology. It is the first night of the first quarter of the lunar month.

 Since the moon is not visible on the day, Amavasya is also referred as No Moon night. Many people in India choose this day to make an offering to their dead ancestors.

There is also an ongoing debate whether Amavasya is auspicious or inauspicious.
