South African Temple where Lord Kartikeya wears a saree!

Reunion is an French island off the coast of South Africa. The Tamil Hindus on the island speak French and worship the Devi and Lord Shiva. Interestingly, the Hindus of Reunion follow shakti and look at Nataraja, who is an aspect of Shiva, as Devi and worship Lord Murugan or Kartikeya as Devi as well. They therefore tie a sari to Murugan and worship him as a manifestation of Mata Uma.

A number of Reunioners who had previously embraced Catholic Christianity are returning back to the Hindu fold and slow but steady number of people are taking Hindu names and embracing Sanatan Hindu Dharma.

May Lord Murugan-Kartikeya of Reunion Island South Africa who is in his aspect as our beloved Mata Rani bless us all!

Why do Chinese worship Lord Shiva's son Kartikeya?

Murugan is most popular amongst the Tamil people who revere Him as Thamizh Kadavul which means 'God of Tamils'. He is also worshiped in Rajasthan and in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, where he is known as Kartik Swami. What very few Hindus knows is that Kartikeya or Murugan is also worshiped by Chinese Buddhist as a protector of Buddhism in China.

Chinese Skanda
Wei Tuo Pú-sà (bodhisattva Skanda/ Murugan) is recognized as one of the eight divine protectors in Chinese Buddhism. Iconographically, he appears as a majestic general in his armor.

Before entering Nirvana, Buddha ordered the general, who remained in this world, to protect the Buddha Dharma. After the death of Buddha, the relics were robbed by evil demons. The Bodhisattva Wei Tuo managed to overcome the demons and recovered the relics of Buddha.

Wei Tuo Pú Sà is regarded as a devoted guardian of Buddhist monasteries who guards faithfully the Buddhist treasures and the objects of the Dharma.

May Lord Wei Tuo Pú Sà who is also known as Murugan and Kartikeya bless us all!

Hanuman and how Mohammed Sadique became Sidheshwar Das

Born in a Muslim family, Mohammad Sadique developed an interest in Hindu religion when he was quite young. Today, in his 80s, he is the chief priest at Ram-Janki temple in Arwal district's Sohsa village of Bihar.

"I adopted Hindu faith decades ago. I look after the temple and perform prayers every day. Now my life is a temple. I have faith in Lord Ram, I was born to worship him," Mohammad Sadique turned Sidheswar Das said.

Vinay Singh, a villager, says that Sidheswar Das is respected by everyone in the village.

"He spends most of his time offering prayers and reeling off names of Hindu gods and goddesses. His devotion and commitment to look after the temple made him a saint," he says.

Another villager, Mahesh Prasad, says that some people call him Ram devotee and others call him Hanuman for his devotion.

"Everyday, he performs all the rituals of a priest, including aarti and distributing sweets among devotees. He is a rare priest," Prasad said.

Touching story of West Indian Hanuman Bhakta Siewadass Sadhu

Siewadass Sadhu gave 25 years to build this stunningly beautiful Hanuman temple called the Temple in the Sea in the sea Waterloo, Trinidad, West Indies. While coming from India Siewadass narrowly escaped German torpedoes and decided to than Lord Hanuman - his Ishta devata by building a temple for him.

Siewadass's repeated attempts to build a temple where defeated because he did not own land and the owners of the huge plantation where he worked refused to let him construct a Hindu temple. Finally, Seiwadass decided to build an island in the open sea where he would build his temple.

He spend 25 years carting rocks on his head and build the island rock by rock and began building the temple in 1947. However, he died in 1971 before he could see the temple become a reality. In 1994, the government of Trinidad honored Siewadass Sadhu's committment by building the temple which is major attraction for devotees today.

May the Ishta Devata of Siewadass Sadhu Lord Hanuman ji of Waterloo protect us all!

When Brazilians honour Mata Jagadamba

On February 2 every year, over 10 lakh devotees assemble in the Brazilian city of Salvador, Bahia, and undertake a jatra that covers the prominent streets of the Rio Vermelho district of the city. The devotees are dressed in white to the small temple dedicated to Yemanjá a powerful Devi in the Afro-Brazilian religious tradition Candomblé.

Yemanjá is Uma - the supreme mother - the protector of children, fishermen and sailors. She is the sea.

The bhoga meant for Mata Yemanja are kept in beautifully designed and decorated baskets that are laden with gifts that are offered to the sea. The offerings include idols of the Devi, flowers and objects of shringar like perfume, jewelry, combs, lipsticks and mirrors.

The day is filled with parties, food and prayers to Yemanja that keep the city awake well into the night.

May Mahadevi Yemanja of Brazil bless us all!
