African Devotees of Maha Durga

There are several devotees in Africa whose parents embraced the Sanatan Hindu Dhrama in Ghana, Africa, under the guidance of His Holiness Shri Ghanananda Saraswati, a Hindu Swami of Ghanian descent.

Several devotees incorporated Hindu deities and rituals into African practices. So when the tribes performed a war dance, they incorporated the worship of Durga, who is the commander of the forces of the Devatas.

Every year on Navaratri, African devotees celebrated Mother Durga’s victory over Mahisasur, which gives her the name Mahisasurmardini. In the book ‘Hindu Gods in West Africa: Ghanaian Devotees of Shiva and Krishna’ by Albert Wuaku, the author recounts how members of the Akan tribe celebrate Navaratri with a war dance along with chanting hymns to the Goddess.

Women handle most of the rituals during Navaratri. They asked Swami to let them do so as a celebration of God in her feminine aspect should give women an important position to women.

Worshiping Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in Muslim Indonesia

Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are present in a cave in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, in the form of three lingas that are venerated by the local Hindus. The cave is called Goa Gajah. Goa, which is pronounced Guha, is cave in Sanskrit and Gajah is elephant.

There was a time when Indonesia, which is now a Muslim country except for the island of Bali, used to be predominantly Hindu. To this day, there are Hindu temples across the country.

Bali, however, remains staunchly Hindu and there also have been several instances of Muslims embracing Hinduism in the country.

May the three Lords - Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha - of Guha Gajah - bless us with pride in the traditions of Sanatan Hindu Dharma!

Swami Ram and the Miracle of Sadashiva

Maa Bhagwati
Pt. Naraindas Raina and his wife Smt. Arnyamali wanted another son. Their elder son was 18 when they sought the blessings of their guru Swami Ram, a great Shiva master. Swami ji gave Shrimati Aryanmali an almond to eat.

Shortly, Shrimati Aryanmali conceived. When the son was born and Swami Ram heard the good news, he shouted with joy, "I am Ram. Let him be called Lakshman."

Swami also announced that Lakshman was a great yogi who would reach the highest stage in this birth. The child grew to become Swami  Lakshman Joo (9 May 1907 – 27 September 1991), the great devotee of Shiva and Maa Bhagwati and a great master of Kashmiri Shaivism.

Swami Laksman Joo lived a life of purity, simplicity and gave the knowledge of the Shaiva Shastras free to anyone who sought knowledge. He influenced several scholars across India and the world with his scholarly writings.

May Sadashiva, who reveals his light on this plane through perfect masters like Shri Lakshman Joo, keep us in his all-transforming light!

How Shiva and Shakti became one as Ardhanareshwar

Rishi Bhringi, a great devotee of Shiva could not bring himself to worship Devi Parvati, because he had no place in his heart for any deity other than Shiva. When all rishis and devatas gathered at Mount Kailasa to worship the divine pair, Bhringi ignored Mata Parvati, who is Aadi Shakti. Devi withdrew her powers from Bhringi and thus Shakti-less, Bhringi fell down as he was unable to stand. Moved by his devotee's plight, with Shiva's blessings, the assembled Devas and Rishis gave Bhringhi the power to stand.

Mata Parvati, then performed great austerities and compelled Shiva to embrace her so completely that their selves merged and the Ardha-Nareshwara form of Shiva manifested. Thereafter, anyone who worships Lord Shiva is known also to worship the Goddess Shakti who is not separate from him. Rishi Bhringi learned his lesson and became wiser due to the experience.

The Lord's Ardhnareshwara form also reminds us that God is beyond gender, and because the individual soul is but an image of the Supreme Soul, we are also taught that whether male or female - within we are both male and female. Also, the soul is gender-less.

May Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati in their Ardhanareshwara form bless us with complete acceptance of the male as well as female energies within us. May we come closer to the supreme truth, which is gender-less!

Har Har Mahadev! Jai Maa!

Jai Jai Shri Swaminath Kanak Chauri waale!

Kartik Swami Temple in Uttarakhand

Kartik Swami or Swaminath as he is also known to to the people of Uttarakhand, has his mool pitha or main temple near the village of Kanak Chauru district Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, is dedicated to the elder son of Lord Shiva, Kartikeya, who offered his bones as testimony of his devotion to his father. It is believed that the incident took place here. Lord Kartik Swami is also known as Kartik Murugan Swami in the southern part of India.

A constant sound from hundreds of bell hung in the temple can be heard at a distance of about 800 meters from there. A flight of 80 stairs from the main road leads you to the garbhagriha of the temple or the place where the idol is kept.

Sandhya Aarti or evening prayers, enchantment of mantras and Maha-bhandara or grand feast organised at the temple occasionally is a special attraction for devotees and tourists.

The temple offers a stunning view of the snow-clad Himalayas and is known to possess miraculous powers. May Lord Kartikeya of Kanak Chauri bless us all with health, happiness and abundance!
