Hail Murugan - Kartikeya of Kataragama, Sri Lanka!

Kartikeya - Ganpati - Maa Parvati

Lord Kataragama is Karktikeya who presides over the Kataragama Devalaya which is dear to the Hindus and Buddhists of Sri Lanka. While the Buddhist honor Kataragama as the protector of the Buddha's dhamma in the land, the Hindus honor the Lord as the son of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati.

The temple complex is a fast-growing city which remains surrounded by a thick jungle. The main festival at the temple is celebrated in July and August every year. A Yantra representing Lord Kartikeya is taken in a procession for all to adore and worship. Devotees walk on fire as a ritual, peirce their bodies and carry kavadis.

May all-powerful Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva, bless all with strength of resolve and faith! Jai Baba Swaminath! Om Namah Shivai!

The Australian diplomat who was called by Lord Murugan

Lord Murugan

Dr. Carl Vadivella Belle experienced an attraction for Lord Murugan, the resplendent son of Lord Shiva, while he was a serving as a diplomat of Australia. He not only took to Hindu worship, as a diplomat in Malaysia, he joined thousands of Kavadis in their journey to the Batu caves for Lord Murugan's blessings.

When he saw kavadis for the first time, he felt an strong energy pass through him which he could not explain. He gradually realized that he was a Hindu at heart and decided to embrace Hinduism. These activities came in the way of his services to the Australian government and Belle had to quit. 

Today he is a farmer outside Adelaide, Australia. He also edits Bhakti, a newsletter published in Canberra, Australia, on Hinduism. His wife and other members of his family are also also Hindu. 

May Lord Murugan, the weilder of the vel spear, and the apple of Mother Parvati's eye, bless his devotees with his all-transforming energy!

Jai Murugan Swami Malaysia Waale - Shri Radhe Maa

Murugan Swami

Batu Caves, a limestone hill that has a several caves and cave temples near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is the most popular Hindu shrine of Malaysia that is home to Lord Murugan Swami, the son of Lord Shiva.

Every year during the Tamil Hindu festival of Thaipusam in January-February lakhs of devotees climb up the hill with Kavadis on their backs and make the journey uphill for a darshan of the Lord. 

The Lord also has several Chinese devotees who have been making the journey for several decades now!

The Batu Cave temple was built in 1890 by Indian trader K. Thamboosamy Pillai who was inspired by the cave that has a shape of Lord Swaminat Kartikeya's spear.

South African Temple where Lord Kartikeya wears a saree!

Reunion is an French island off the coast of South Africa. The Tamil Hindus on the island speak French and worship the Devi and Lord Shiva. Interestingly, the Hindus of Reunion follow shakti and look at Nataraja, who is an aspect of Shiva, as Devi and worship Lord Murugan or Kartikeya as Devi as well.They therefore tie a sari to Murugan and worship him as a manifestation of Mata Uma.

A number of Reunioners who had previously embraced Catholic Christianity are returning back to the Hindu fold and slow but steady number of people are taking Hindu names and embracing Sanatan Hindu Dharma.

Why do Chinese worship Lord Shiva's son Kartikeya?

Murugan is most popular amongst the Tamil people who revere Him as Thamizh Kadavul which means 'God of Tamils'. He is also worshiped in Rajasthan and in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, where he is known as Kartik Swami. What very few Hindus knows is that Kartikeya or Murugan is also worshiped by Chinese Buddhist as a protector of Buddhism in China.  

Chinese Skanda

Wei Tuo Pú-sà (bodhisattva Skanda/ Murugan) is recognized as one of the eight divine protectors in Chinese Buddhism. Iconographically, he appears as a majestic general in his armor.

Before entering Nirvana, Buddha ordered the general, who remained in this world, to protect the Buddha Dharma. After the death of Buddha, the relics were robbed by evil demons. The Bodhisattva Wei Tuo managed to overcome the demons and recovered the relics of Buddha.

Wei Tuo Pú Sà is regarded as a devoted guardian of Buddhist monasteries who guards faithfully the Buddhist treasures and the objects of the Dharma.

Mother Yemaya - Skanda Mata

Skanda Mata and Mother Yemaya in the Nigerian tradition

Skandamata is Goddess Parvati in her role as mother of Lord Skanda or Kartikeya.  As Mata Rani is in her maternal aspect in this manifestation, she is believed to be extremely beneficent to devotees who seek her as Skandamata. Probably the best known depiction of the Divine Feminine as Mother comes to us in the form of the depictions of Mother Mary with Jesus among others.

The role of Supreme Mother in the Yoruba tradition of Nigeria is fulfilled by Yemaya. Yemaya is the ocean, the essence of motherhood, and a fierce protector of children. Yemaya is said to be the mother of all Gods in the Nigerian IFA tradition.
