German Swami Gauribala Giri, the sadhu with a sense of humor!

Maa Gauri

Mother Parvati's child Gauribala Giri, born in an affluent German family and originally named Peter Schoenfeld, was a disciple of the Shaiva Master Yogaswami of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He was known for his childlike laugh and his jokes. He often smoked a cigar and told everyone that it was his chemical weapon to keep unwanted people away.

Once a man asked the Swami, a initiate of Shakta Tantra, why there was so much evil in the world.

Swami asked the man his religion.

Christian, the man said.

Then Swami asked, "Who built this troublesome world?"

Well, God is said to have done so."

"What kind of work was His creation? Plenty of flaws, like what we do?"

The work of God is all-perfect," the man replied, good Christian that he was.

To which Swami retorted, "Then why do you see imperfection in this mysterious being God, in whom you believe?"

When Brazilians honour Mata Jagadamba

On February 2 every year, over 10 lakh devotees assemble in the Brazilian city of Salvador, Bahia, and undertake a jatra that covers the prominent streets of the Rio Vermelho district of the city. The devotees are dressed in white to the small temple dedicated to Yemanjá a powerful Devi in the Afro-Brazilian religious tradition Candomblé.

Yemanjá is Uma - the supreme mother - the protector of children, fishermen and sailors. She is the sea.

The bhoga meant for Mata Yemanja are kept in beautifully designed and decorated baskets that are laden with gifts that are offered to the sea. The offerings include idols of the Devi, flowers and objects of shringar like perfume, jewelry, combs, lipsticks and mirrors.

The day is filled with parties, food and prayers to Yemanja that keep the city awake well into the night.

May Mahadevi Yemanja of Brazil bless us all!

Navratri Festival Special 2013 - Did you know?

Devi Shailputri in ancient Greece

Aspects of Goddess Shailputri, or the Daughter of the Mountain, or Uma, were present in the ancient Greek-Roman tradition's depictions of the Goddess Cybele. Like Goddess Durga, Cybele was associated with mountains (Pahada-waali), hawks and lions (Sherawali). She was often depicted riding a chariot or rath driven by lions like Goddess Durga. Cybele was dear to eunuch and trans-gendered people (hijras) like Mahashakti Renuka in the Hindu tradition. Mother Cybele was also known as 'Mother of the mountain.'
