Hail Mahadeva Shiva, the Lord of Rama!

Lord Shiva and Lord Rama

Lord Rama invoked Lord Shiva before he embarked on his journey to rescue Mata Sita and defeat Ravana, the king of asuras.Please with Lord Rama's devotion, Lord Shiva appeared to the Lord Rama and granted him his blessings in his battle against the king of asuras. 

This became possible because despite the truth that Ravana was a learned Brhamin and a great devotee of Shiva, he had deviated from the path of dharma by taking Sita away to Lanka, his kingdom. This tells us that devotion to God is not enough. Dharma demands that we also live an ethical life. Ravana forgot this and had to pay with his life.

After his wish was granted, Lord Rama, being ever compassionate, asked Lord Shiva to remain at the spot forever so that others could also benefit from his blessings. Lord Shiva agreed and turned himself into a linga. The spot is today known to us a Ramaeshwaram, which is one of the 12 powerful Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

May Lord Shiva, the natha of Lord Rama, or Rameshwaram, bless us with peace, strength and liberation from the cycle of life and death.

Do you want Lord Krishna or his power?

Before the Mahabharata war began, Lord Krishna who was a diplomat par excellence, a king who cared for his subjects and a dharimic politician offered the Pandavas and Kauravas a choice. They could either have him on their side as a non-combatant - he would not fight - or they could choose his powerful army comprising the mighty Yadavas. 

Duryodhana who was practical and worldly-wise chose the army. Arjuna, the friend and devotee of Lord Krishna, chose the Lord. All of us make this choice. We have to live in the phenomenal world and fight our battles. While battles can be won if you have powerful friends and associates. But the big war against maya cannot be won unless one surrenders to the lord. 

May Shri Krishna, the friend of Partha, guide us on the path of dharma. Jai Ranchhod Krishna ki!

Karna and Duryodhana's wife - a tale of great friendship

We know of the exemplary friendships between Krishna and Sudama and between Krishna and Arjuna. However, there is one friendship that is not as well known - that between the arch villain of the Mahabharata Duryodhan and Karna, the son of a charioteer. 

Karna was playing and game of dice with his friend Duryodhana's wife Bhanumati in her chamber. Bhanumati saw Duryodhana enter the chamber and got up to receive him. Karna who had his back to the door thought that Bhanumati wanted to leave the game because she was leaving. In a second of thoughtlessness he extended his hand to stop her and inadvertently broke her necklace of pearls.

Duryodhana's wife was shocked and Karna felt embarrassed because the situation could easily be misunderstood. Duryodhana, however, merely smiled and asked if Bhanumati wanted him to just pick the pearls from the ground or she wanted him to string it for him as well.

So complete was Duryodhan's faith in his wife and his friend. It should not surprise us that mighty Karna ultimately embraced death fighting for his dear friend Duryodhana. What is a leader without faith in the closest members of his team?

Our shastras teach us that good ideas should be embraced wherever they come from. Such is the glory of the Mahabharata that even the villains have something to teach.

Jai Mata Bhadrakali of Warangal!

Bhadrakali Mata

The Bhadrakali Temple in Warangal, Telangana is known to be one of the oldest temples of Goddess Bhadrakali in India. It was constructed by the King Pulakesi II of Chalukya dynasty in seventh century.

Sri Ganapathi Sastri a devout Shakti upaska from Karnataka began to live near the temple in the 1940s. The temple was dilapidated. Shastri ji decided to renovate the temple and with the help of several merchants in the area rebuild the temple.

Animal sacrifice was stopped at the temple and the goddess who was originally in her ugra form was invoked in her shanta aspect. Mata Bhadrakali is known for her benevolence and kindness towards her children.

Shastri ji left his body at the age of 113 and his son is the priest at the temple now. The temple supports a Ved Shala where students are taught the Vedas.

Sufi Abdul Shah Bhitai and Mata Hinglaj - an ancient tale from Pakistan

The Hindus of Balochistan recount a tale.

Sufi Abdul Shah Bhitai (1689 – 1752), the master poet and saint from Sindh, once visited the Nani Mandir, the moola sthana of Mata Hinglaj, the kul devi of several Rajput, Lohana and Goldsmith families of Sindh, Gujrat and Rajasthan. The Mata presence is believed to left the site but when the Sufi lifted a bowl of kheer to the goddess, she animated the idol with her presence once again.

The presence of the temple and the continued worship of Mata Hinglaj shows us that large sections of Muslims in Sindh and Balochistan continue to be tolerant and accommodating towards Hindu and other minorities as they have been for centuries.   

May Mata Hinlaj of Kanraj Mountains near Karachi, in the Baluchistan province of  Pakistan, bless all her devotees with compassion, love and strength.

Mumbai: Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa Charitable Trust reiterated its commitment towards empowering the girl child by supporting the Corpus Fund for Scholarship to needy, talented and meritorious students in UPACA Academy, a reputed institution in Mumbai that trains students for a career in charted accountancy.

UPACA Academy states its aim as “….enabling students to exploit the sea of opportunities provided by the fields of Accountancy,  Finance, Compliance and Law. To systemize the educational framework in the field of Accountancy and Finance, with specific emphasis on Chartered Accountancy by providing all services essential to create industry ready professionals under one roof.”

Radhe Guru Maa is a guru in the Sanatan Hindu tradition who emphasizes on the route of bhakti as explained in the dharma shastras of the Hindu religion. “Guru Maa has been supporting various social upliftment initiatives for the last 17 years and we are happy to be part of UPACA’s efforts to empower the girl child through scholarships. The health of our society depends on the status we accord to the girl child. We have a long way ahead but derive some satisfaction from the fact that we have taken a step in the direction. Shri Radhe Maa - Who is superior Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva?

Sant Narhari Sonar, master craftsman of gold ornaments, was such a staunch devotee of Lord Mallikarjun Shiva that even though he visited his Ishta Devata’s temple in Pandharpur every day, he had vowed that he would  never enter the famous Lord Vitthal temple.

He was a committed Shiva and he would not have anything to do with Vaishnavas and their Vishnu who stood on a brick in the sanctum of the Vitthal temple.

When a customer asked Narhari to make a waist band of gold for Lord Vitthala, Narhari who had vowed to never look upon any deity other than Shiva agreed but placed a condition. Narhari would stay blindfolded when he entered the temple to measure the size of the Lord’s waist and he would exit the temple without taking the blind fold.

The customer agreed. However, when Narhari measured Lord Vitthal’s waist, he was surprised to note that the idol was that of Shiva. He felt the trishul, the deer skin, the moon on his head and Ganga. He asked the customer if he had been brought to a Shiva temple instead of the Vitthal temple. The customer assured him that he was holding the idol of Lord Vitthal.

Narhari took off the blindfold and saw Lord Vitthal standing before his surprised eyes. He understood what Vitthal had to say: there was no difference between Shiva and Vishnu. God was indeed one. Narhari, his eyes opened, burst into tears and prostrated before the Lord of Pandharpur!

May Mata Rumini of Pandharpur bless us with devotion for the sweet lord of Pandharpur who is the boat that helpls all beings cross the ocean of samsara!
