German Swami Gauribala Giri, the son of Mata Kalika

Maa Kali
Born in a upper class intellectual German Jewish family in the first decade of the 18th century as Peter Joachim Schoenfeldt, German Swami was at various times a Mahayana Buddhist Monk, a Tantric Master of the Tibetan school and finally a devotee of Maa Adya Shakti and a sanyasi of the Naga Dasnami order established by Adi Shankaracharya.

Gauribala Swami travelled all over India and Tibet and met many masters but did not find any he could accept with all his heart. Then one day as he was browsing through some books at a bookstore in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, a poorly dressed man with a beard and strange ways, came up to Gauribala and said, "You bloody fool, it is not found in books."

Gauribala has found his guru in Yogaswami of Nallur.

A website dedicated to the tradition to which German Swami belongs, mentions how German Swami loved cracking jokes.

"German Swami was at the Mahadevale gate with begging bowl. Coins flowed in, perhaps because he was European.

A richly-dressed man was about to pass by when Swami repeated the begging mantra. The man looked at him, embarrassed, and touching his breast pocket said, "No change."

Pat came the instant reply with feigned humility and a side-grin at me: "We also accept big notes!"

Swami Gauribala left his body in 1984 with the words Umma, Umma, Umma! (Uma, the Supreme Mother) on his lips.

May Mother Gauri, the mother of Swami Gauribala and of the Universe bless us with the supreme gift of Ananda! Jai Mata Di!

A king, a dream & Mata Kali - a tale from Bangladesh

King Ballal Sen had a dream in which Mata Kalika directed him to visit a particular spot where he would find her idold. The pious king visited the spot and found the idol and after consecrating it built the temple to Kali, which is today known as the Dhakeshwari Kalika temple of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

It is believed that Dhaka has been named after Mata Dhakshwari Kalika and her temple is today the most popular Hindu temple in Bangladesh.

May Mata Dhakeshwari bless us with abundance, compassion and courage to face the burdens that are placed on us. Jai Maa Dhakeshwari Kalika! Jai Mata Di!

A Kali temple where rats are honored as divine

Karni Mata

Life is sacred and it is man in his ego who feels that he is the centre of the universe. While the shastras describe that it is rare for a soul to take human birth and that one should honor such a birth by living according to the dictates of dharma, and live in such a way that no being on earth has any reason to fear.

At the Karni Mata Temple of Bikaner, rats are honored. They are fed, given milk and allowed to roam free. Thousands of devotees come to the temple and even bring children along. The rats do not mind being touched, held or petted. The rats are not harmed in any manner.

May Mata Karni Kalika in her aspect as the mother of all beings bless all beings with love, compassion and tolerance. Sri Karni Mata ki Jai! Jai Mata Di!

Jai Haat Kalika Pithoragarhwaali!

Gangolihat is a minor town in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, and is home to the Shakti Peetha Hat Kalika that honors the all powerful Goddess Kalika.

Haat Kalika Mandir was built by Adi Guru Sankaracharya who is believed to have asked the goddess to relocate from West Bangal to this Temple.

Mata Gangoli, as she is also known, is the granter of courage and success in battle. She is very popular among the armed forces who have built a resthouse for devotees serving in the forces.

Shaheed Param Veer Chakra award winner Capt. Bikram Batra was a great devotee of this Goddess, and is known to die with 'Jai Mata Di' on his lips as he fought till the finish during the Kargil war. Mahakali Mata is goddess of the much decorated Kumaun Regiment known for its unmatched bravery and patriotism.
