Nanda
Devi, a powerful manifestation of Devi Sati, that is dear to the people
of Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand, is honoured in a huge
21-day procession attended by thousands of people through the
Uttarakhand Himalayas. The occasion called the Raj Jat is held once in
12 years and was attended by over 5,000 people who trekked through
280-km of difficult terrain to complete the Raj Jat.
Nanda Devi
chooses her ram (Male sheep) born with four horns instead of two! The
Ram is understood to belong to the goddess and is brought up with a lot
of care. At the culmination of the Raj Jat, the sheep is dressed in
finery and precious metals and freed so it can ascend the Himalayas on
its own. It is in fact the This is how Mahashakti Nanda Devi calls her
ram home.
