On this blessed day, we honor the lotus feet of our Guru Maa Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa, whose mercy and grace free us from our sorrows and give us the strength bear the challenges of life. Adi Shankara, the celebrated expounder of Adwaita Vedanta, wrote a stotra in praise of the guru's padukas or sandals as one cannot gain knowledge without the grace of the guru.

Guru Purnima falls on Friday, July 30- 31 this year. The occasion celebrates not just human gurus who are alive and those who are no longer in their bodies but the 'guru tatva' - the guru principle present in the universe. The guru tatva is God himself as it is all pervading - it is present everywhere. Animals, plants, experiences, minerals and even enemies have something to teach us. There is no gyaan without guru. And for one who raises his awareness, the guru tattva present everywhere takes him towards the Supreme Light that is God Himself.

So we take this opportunity to praise teachers in all forms and of all kinds who teach us important lessons in life, and impart insights that make our mental, intellectual and spiritual growth possible. We thank our great Rishis who revealed to us the astounding truths of the Vedas. We thank Maharishi Panini the great grammarian of Sanskrit. We thank masters like Sri Madhavacharya, Sri Ramanujacharya, Sri Vallabhacharya, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Adi Sankara whose teachings, paramparas and sadhus have kept the flame of sanatana dharma alive against all odds.

May we continue to be blessed with the refuge of Mamtamai Shri Radhe Maa's feet and serve Sanatan Dharma to the best of our abilities. Mamtamai Shri Radhe Maa ki Jai! Guru Tatva ki Jai! Satya Sanatan Hindu Dharma ki Jai!

Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa - Glory of Guru Bhakti

Guru Purnima

The Mahabharata tells us that Rishi Aayod Dhaumya once told his disciple Uddalaka Aruni to guard the Ashram’s fields. At night, it it rained very heavily and the mud bunds around the fields started to give way. Aruni tried to rebuild the bunds but the flow of the water was too strong. The Guru's orders had to be obeyed at every cost. In desperation, Aruni himself lay on the ground to step the flow with his body. It helped but Aruni started shivering from the cold. His clothes wet, his body in pain, Rishi Aayod Dhaumya found Aruni lying on the ground.

Moved by Aruni's Guru Bhakti, Rishi Aayod Dhaumya granted Aruni consummate knowledge of the shastras. Such is the glory of guru bhakti!

May we be blessed with the desire to serve the lotus feet of our guru whose refuge is the only antidote to maya! Wish all devotees a happy Guru Purnima! Jai Guru! Jai Maa! Jai Guru Maa!

Guru Purnima- Day of the liberating light

Shri Radhe Guru Maa - Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is a day to honor our Gurus because it is also the day that Lord Mahavira, Lord Buddha, Veda Vyasa and the Adi Guru Lord Shiva first assumed the responsibility of imparting the knowledge of liberation

The Guru opens the door to the kingdom of liberation to the seeker. The guru is the master physician who possesses the magical ointment that opens the seekers eye to the truth. Service to the guru’s feet turns the desire of the seeker for liberation into a raging fire that burns away all attachments that bind him to the material world. The Guru is verily Parabrahman – the Supreme Soul.

In the Hindu tradition, the Guru Poornima is a day of honouring Veda Vyasa, the author of Mahabharata, who is among the greatest teachers of mankind. It also marks the day on which Shiva, the Adi Guru, imparted the secret of Yoga to his disciples the Sapta Rishis or the ‘Seven Wise Ones’. The day is important because it is through this knowledge that humans though bound by virtue of being embodied, can through walking the path of Yoga, become free from the Samsara, which is the state of being tied to the binary of pleasure-pain. Such a person who is drawn to that which brings pleasure and avoids that which brings pain is forever deluded that he is the body. The Guru is the one who rids one of this illusion. Guru Poornima marks the day this transcendental knowledge was handed to mankind. The day also commemorates the day on which the Buddha gave his first sermon, as it does the day Lord Mahavira accepted his first disciple after attaining Kaivalya.

Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa is honoured as a guru by lakhs of her followers. For the most part Guru Maa follows the path of the silent masters who instruct and guide without speaking a word. She does, however, speak on some occasions. And on one such occasion she has said that an imparter of knowledge – a Guru – should be worshipped as God Himself.

May the Adi Guru Shiva bless us with the desire for service to the Guru’s feet that have been described as the ‘nauka’ or boat that helps the disciple cross the ‘samsaar sagar’ or ocean of suffering.

A very happy Guru Purnima to you.
