How Mumbai got its name

A demon named Mumbarka who was oppressing the residents of present-day Mumbai was punished by the great Shakti. The demon fell on his knees and surrendered to the Goddess and offered everything, including his name to the Goddess. The pleased Goddess asked the demon to mend his ways and gave permission to the demon to build a temple in Mumbai.

The Goddess as the benefactor of the demon Mumbarka came to be known as Mumba Devi, and the city where the temple stands came to be known as Mumbai, which, some say, is a shortened form of 'Mumba Aai' or Mother Mumba.

May Mother Mumba Devi bless us all!
