Shri Radhe Maa - Saint who lived in the Samshaan

Bamakhepa (1837-1911), Ma Tara's beloved son, who was also known as the 'mad saint' lived near the Tarapith temple in Birbhum district of West Bengal and was often found meditating in the smashan bhoomi. People thought him mad because he behaved in strange ways. He was once beaten up by the temple pujaris when he ate the offering meant for the Devi. That night, Maa Tara appeared in the dream of Maharani of Natore. "Feed my son before you feed me." she ordered.

Thereafter, Bamakhepa, the great tantric master, was always fed before the Devi.

May Sri Bamakhepa, the apple of Maa Tara's eyes, bless us with devotion to her feet.

Shri Radhe Maa - How devotees repay loan taken by Balaji

It is believed that Lord Venkateshwara Balaji had to make arrangements for his wedding. Lord Kubera credited money to the god Venkateswara (a form of the god Vishnu) for his marriage with Padmavati. Srinivasa sought a loan of one crore and 1.4 million (11,400,000) coins of gold from Kubera and had Viswakarma, the divine architect, create heavenly surroundings in the Seshadri hills.

Devotees go to Tirupati to donate money in Venkateswara's hundi (donation pot) so that he can pay it back to Kubera. The hundi collections go as high as Rs 2.5 crore a day. The annual gold offering is as high as 3,000 kg.

Did you know? : It is not Balaji who gets hair offered by devotees.

Devotees tonsure their head as an offering to God. The weight of hair collected at the Tirupati Balaji Temple is over a ton and it fetches. The hair is auctioned to international buyers for use as hair extensions and in cosmetics and brought Rs 200 crore to the temple last year.

Now, for the story behind the practice. Once, Lord Balaji developed a bald patch on his head after he was hit on his head by a shepherd. Neeladri Devi, a Gandharva princess, was moved by the Lord's beautiful form and thought that the patch did not look good on a male so beautiful and cut her beautiful hair and restored his bald patch.

Lord Balaji honored her sacrifice by promising her that hair offered by devotees would be gifted to her, and she is the one who gets the hair to this day.

Fazlul Hasan Hasrat Mohani, the Sufi who loved Krishna

Lord Shri Krishna

Hasrat Mohani was a freedom fighter, a renowned Urdu Poet Islamic scholar and Sufi master of two traditions and a staunch supporter of Balgangadhar Tilak. Hasrat wrote poems expressing deep love for Shri Krishna and eagerly participated in Janmashtami celebrations in Mathura.

Hasrat Mohani

Ankhon meun nūr-i-jalwa-i-be-kaif-o-kam hai khās
Jab se nazar pe unkī nigāh-i-karam hai khās
Kuch ham ko bhī ‘atā ho ki ai hazrat-i-Kirishn
Iqlīm-i-‘ishq āp ke zer-i-qadam hai khās
Hasrat kī bhī qubūl ho mathurā meN hāzirī
Sunte haiN ‘āshiqoN pe tumhārā karam hai khās

When he cast at me his especially kind glance,
My eyes lit up with a nameless unending vision.

Revered Krishna, bestow something on me too,
For at your feet lies the entire realm of Love.
May that you accept Hasrat too at Mathura—
I hear you are specially kind to lovers.
               - Hasrat Mohani

Pakistan's national poet’s views on Lord Shri Krishna

Shri Krishna

Mohammed Iqbal, the national poet of Pakistan
In the intellectual history of mankind, the name of Shri Krishna will always be taken with great regard and reverence because it was the magnificent man who attacked the philosophical renditions of his country and his people and placed before them the truth that renunciation does not mean total inaction. Action is the demand of nature, which reinforces existence; renunciation means non-attachment or indifference to the results of the action.
