Marathi Gondhal for Maa Amba in Mauritius
The
bulk of Indian immigration to Mauritius started in 1834, when slavery
was abolished by the British colonial government to compensate the
shortage of labour resulting from the refusal of the African slaves to
work in the fields.Marathas from various districts were also recruited
and most of these families after they were freed from their compulsary
work term purchased land in Mauritius and settled there.
Mauritian
Marathas have held the memories of Maharashtra, of Shivaji Maharaj and
of Hindu gods and goddesses close to their heart. There are several
temples run by the Marathas of Mauritius. They continue to hold Gondhals
to honour Mata Amba to this day.
Gudi Padwa, Maharashtra Day, Shivaji Jayanti and the Ganesh Chaturthi are national public holidays in Mauritius.
