Maa Kalika, Mata Anandamayee and the mad man - a leela

Kalika Devi

The year was 1948, when a mentally disturbed man entered a garden where Mata Anandamayee (30 April 1896 - 27 August 1982), who was widely revered as an avatar of Mata Amba, was granting darshan. The man ordered all women to cover their heads but they paid him not attention. He then went to Maa and asked her to cover her head and she agreed. All the other women copied Maa.

The man sat in the men's section for some time and got up to leave. Maa asked a devotee to give the mad man fruit as prasad. The man took it and then flung it at Maa in anger. The orange hit Maa. Upset devotees caught the man and took it out of the satsang area and roughed him up. Maa told her devotees that they were wrong to beat up the man.

The man returned the next day completely sobered. It turned out that he had been healed of his condition after he threw the fruit at Maa. He had come to express his gratitude. "You should not stop anyone who comes to this body," she said, referring to herself.

Jai Mata Kalika! Jai Anandmayee Maa!

Soldiers who attack with "Jai Maha Kali" on their lips

These warriors from the Himalayas battled with the British in the 19th century and were such fearsome fighters that after the war was over, the British Army decided that they wanted these men on their side. Though India is now independent, Britain continues to recruit these soldiers who have a reputation for being deadly across the world directly from Nepal.

Yes, we are talking about the Hindu and Buddhist Gorkhas of Nepal and India who enter battle with the cry "Jai Maha Kali! Aayo Gorkhali (Glory to Maha Kali! The Gorkhali are here!) "! These men continue to fight in the British ranks and are at the front on most war fronts including Afghanistan where they fought the Taliban.

These brave warriors have also served India with distinction in all its wars including the Kargil war. Three warriors from Gurkha battalions have been awarded India's highest gallantry award Param Vira Chakra.

May Maha Kali bless the fierce knives of these fearless soldiers! Jai Maha Kal! Jai Pashupatinath!

Jai Dakshineshwari Kalika California Wali!

Kali Maa

Founded in 1993 by Elizabeth Usha Harding, author of Kali, The Black Goddess of Dakshineswar, the Kali Mandir of Laguna Beach, California, is a temple that welcomes all devotees without exception and maintains a close relationship with the Dakshineshwari Kali Temple where the goddess is Worshipped as Bhavatarini or the one who helps cross the ocean of suffering. This temple is special because it saw the leelas of Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and Mata Sarada Devi and the pratima was worshipped by Sri Ramakrishna himself.

The temple follows the right handed path which means no animal sacrifices. The devotees who are mostly but not exclusively American are pure vegetarian devoted to the Goddess whose prana pratishtan was done by Bengali Brahmins from Dakshineshwar.

May Mata Dakshineshwari Mahakalika of Laguna beach, California, bless us with wisdom, love and compassion for all beings that are but manifestations of her light! Jai Mata Kalika! Jar Guru Maa!

Jai Mata Pavagadh Kalika!

The ancient Pavagadh temple was built in the 10th century but Kalika Mata who is the main deity of the temple along with Bhauchar Mata. The Devis have been worshiped by the Vanvasi Bhils and Kolis in the area for centuries before the temple was built.

Maharishi Vishwamitra is said to have formally installed the idols of Mata Kalika at the temple. The Mother is said to be in residence at the temple which is renowned for blessing devotees with the shakti required for fulfilling the four purusharthas - dharma, artha, kama and moksha.

Pavagadh is a Shakti Peethas, where Mata Sati's toe is said to have fallen when Lord Bholenath danced his tandava in anger after Mata Sati gave up her life after Lord Shiva was insulted by her father.

May the merciful mothers Mata Kalika and Mata Bahauchar of Pavagadh bless us all with intelligence, discrimination and love for all beings!
