Guru Purnima- Day of the liberating light

Shri Radhe Guru Maa - Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is a day to honor our Gurus because it is also the day that Lord Mahavira, Lord Buddha, Veda Vyasa and the Adi Guru Lord Shiva first assumed the responsibility of imparting the knowledge of liberation

The Guru opens the door to the kingdom of liberation to the seeker. The guru is the master physician who possesses the magical ointment that opens the seekers eye to the truth. Service to the guru’s feet turns the desire of the seeker for liberation into a raging fire that burns away all attachments that bind him to the material world. The Guru is verily Parabrahman – the Supreme Soul.

In the Hindu tradition, the Guru Poornima is a day of honouring Veda Vyasa, the author of Mahabharata, who is among the greatest teachers of mankind. It also marks the day on which Shiva, the Adi Guru, imparted the secret of Yoga to his disciples the Sapta Rishis or the ‘Seven Wise Ones’. The day is important because it is through this knowledge that humans though bound by virtue of being embodied, can through walking the path of Yoga, become free from the Samsara, which is the state of being tied to the binary of pleasure-pain. Such a person who is drawn to that which brings pleasure and avoids that which brings pain is forever deluded that he is the body. The Guru is the one who rids one of this illusion. Guru Poornima marks the day this transcendental knowledge was handed to mankind. The day also commemorates the day on which the Buddha gave his first sermon, as it does the day Lord Mahavira accepted his first disciple after attaining Kaivalya.

Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa is honoured as a guru by lakhs of her followers. For the most part Guru Maa follows the path of the silent masters who instruct and guide without speaking a word. She does, however, speak on some occasions. And on one such occasion she has said that an imparter of knowledge – a Guru – should be worshipped as God Himself.

May the Adi Guru Shiva bless us with the desire for service to the Guru’s feet that have been described as the ‘nauka’ or boat that helps the disciple cross the ‘samsaar sagar’ or ocean of suffering.

A very happy Guru Purnima to you.
