Devotees tonsure their head as an offering to God. The
weight of hair collected at the Tirupati Balaji Temple is over a ton and
it fetches. The hair is auctioned to international buyers for use as
hair extensions and in cosmetics and brought Rs 200 crore to the temple
last year.
Now,
for the story behind the practice. Once, Lord Balaji developed a bald
patch on his head after he was hit on his head by a shepherd. Neeladri
Devi, a Gandharva princess, was moved by the Lord's beautiful form and
thought that the patch did not look good on a male so beautiful and cut
her beautiful hair and restored his bald patch.
Lord
Balaji honored her sacrifice by promising her that hair offered by
devotees would be gifted to her, and she is the one who gets the hair to
this day.
