The Ketheeswaram Mahadev temple is among the oldest Shiva temples in Sri Lanka. It is believed to be at least 2,500 years old. It is known as the place where Lord Ketu worshipped Shiva. It is believed to have been originally been built by the father of queen Mandodari, the wife of Shiva, a woman of great purity who was known to be a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva like her husband.
This is also said to be the place where Mandodari hailed from. It is also believed to be the temple where Maharishi Bhrighu honored Lord Shiva. The temple had fallen into disuse for four centuries before the Hindus of Sri Lanka under the guidance of the great Hindu reformer Arumuka Navalar decided to renovate the temple.
The restoration has not been completed till date because of the civil war in Sri Lanka.
May Ketheeshwaram Shiva bless all beings with desire for the supreme happiness - ananda - which is our true nature! Om Namah Sivai! Jai Parvati Patae! Har Har Mahadev!
