Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan, the legendary shehnai player, once met a cowherd boy in a train that was taking him from Jamshedpur to Varanasi in a third-class compartment. He was slim and black and held a flute. When ustaad asked him to play something, the gwala played a raga he had not heard in his life. The music brought tears to his eyes.
He gave the gwala a coin and asked him to play the tune again. This went on till Ustad had spent all he had in his wallet. The boy left at the next station. Ustad was convinced that he had seen none other than Sri Krishna himself.
Bismilla Khan played the Raga he had heard the gwala play at several musical concerts and when people asked him what it was called, he said it was the "Kanhaira raga". Kanha being a popular name for Lord Krishna in Brij Bhasha and Avadhi.
