The
upmarket Prabhadevi area in central Mumbai is the powerful shakti sthaan
dedicated to Goddess Shakambhari, the Goddess who rules over vegetation
and is therefore also the Goddess of food without whom existence is not
possible. The original temple was built by the Yadava king Bimba Raja
of Gujarat who ruled over Mumbai then. Due to the idol-breaking ways of
the Mughals the idol was hidden by devotees in a well.
In the 18th century, Devi Prabhadevi appeared in the
dream of a rich man from the Pathare Prabhu caste and asked to be
removed from the well. The idol was retrieved and installed with due
ceremony and has been worshiped by Hindus of all communities since then.
The house where Mata Shakambari is worshiped is blessed with abundance
of health, happiness, peace and wealth! May Mata Shakambhari bless us
all!
Jai Mata Shakambhari Prabhavati ki! Jai Mata Di!
