Vinayaka, who is also known as Kangiten, is worshiped as a powerful deity in Japan. The HÅkaiji temple in Kamakura in Japan is known for its powerful Ganesha idol in which he is characterized as embracing his female self. Such forms are also common in Indian and Tibetan idols in the Tantric tradition.
The deity at Hokaiji temple is honored as a protector (pati) of the ranks (gana) of devotees and as granter of wishes (Varada-Vianayaka), two forms in which he is also known across India. The idol is however considered so powerful that its shrine is always closed and visitors are not given access.
