Hail Maa Durga Mahishasur Mardini of Guharagarh, Maharashtra!

Mata Durga of Guhagarh is the kuladevi of several Chitpavan Brahmins of Guharagarh, Chiploon, in the Ratnagiri district of Maharshtra, a land known for its saints, visionaries and warriors.

The temple was shifted here from an old site nearby where a pillar marks the spot. While the Devi faught Mahishasur the demon a pearl from her ornament broke and fell in the area where the temple is located.

The pearl continues to be a part of the temple treasury where it is valued for its connection to the Great Mother whose mere glance can cause one to transcend the cycle of birth and death and attain to immortality.

The temple also has smaller shrines dedicated to the five forms of divinity sanctioned by Adi Shankaracharya - Ganesh, Surya, Lakshmi Narayan, and Shiva.

May Mother Durga of Guhagarh Chiploon bless us with intelligence, courage and discrimination that distances us from objects that give fleeting pleasure and take us to the service of the the Divine Mother whose play animates the universe!

Jai Mata Di! Jai Maa Durga durgatinashini!
