Vithoba Krishna and the Muslim king - the story of Damaji Pant

Damaji Pant of Mangalwedha, Solapur, Maharashtra, who worked for the Muslim king of Bedar as his revenue collector, was moved by the plight of the poor in his famine-struck region. Without a care for his own safety and without fearing the consequences he opened up the royal granary and distributed the grains to the hungry population. An angry king ordered Damaji to pay up or face the consequences.

On the way to the king's palace, Damaji asked the royal soldiers to let him take Vithoba's darshan for one last time because he did not know if the king would let him live after what he had done.

Vithoba, moved by his devotees plight, assumed the form of a servant and presented himself before the king, paid the money demanded by him, collected a receipt and left the scene before Damaji reached the court. When the Damaji learnt of what had happened he was moved to tears and now free rushed to his beloved Panduranga and spend the remainder of his life at Pandharpur, the abode of Lord Vitthala after donating all his wealth to the poor.

Sant Damaji Maharaj ki jai! Rama Krishna Hari! Jai Hari Vithala!
