A chamaar whose feet are holy for all Vaishnavas

Sant Chokhamela Maharaj was barred from entering the temple of his beloved Vitthala because he was in a Mahar/ Chamaar family, which was considered untouchable by the caste-ridden society of the day. One day, it so happened that Chokha was overtaken by a desire to have darshan of his beloved Vitthala and stared with longing at the door feeling completely helpless.

After the day ended, and the priests locked the temple and left, Chokha stood at some distance longing for a sight of the Lord, who was moved. Vitthala emerged from the temple, embraced his devotee and put his necklace in Chokha's neck. Chokha was so moved that he experienced a deep ecstasy and  when morning came, he was found with the deity's necklace around his neck. The enraged priests ordered that Chokha be dragged by bullocks to his death.

However, the bullocks would not budge despite a sound whipping. Chokha suffered beatings, and humiliation and called on Lord Vitthala and rescued his devotee.

May Sant Shri Chokhamela Maharaj's example inspire our hearts with love for the feet of Shri Hari the lord of Pandharpur. Jai Shri Krishna! Shri Chokhamela Maharaj ki jai!
