Shivaratri, the night of Lord Shiva's tandava

Shivaratri marks the night when Shiva manifested himself in the form of a Linga for to accept the love of his devotees. It marks the night when he first danced his magnificient tandava cosmic dance and assumed the Natraja pose. While devotees offer bael leaves and milk to Shiva on this night, Shivaratri is celebrated in a deeper way by living with the awareness that Nataraja- Shiva and his dance-the universe are inseparable. Shiva is manifests himself in this world through Shakti.Shivaratri also celebrates the moment when Shiva drank the poison that came from the samudra manthan. His throat became blue and he came to be known as nilakantha!

Without Shakti (Devi) Shiva is a Shava (corpse).

Jai Mata Di! Har Har Mahadev!

Devi Vajreshwari Mata and Maratha Warrior Chimaji Appa

In 1739, the Maratha general Chimaji Appa,  the younger brother and military commander of Peshwa Baji Rao I, had set camp in the Vadvali region of Maharashtra near Mumbai on his way to capture the Portuguese held Bassein Fort of Vasai. The fort was unconquerable even after a three-year war.

Chimaji Appa prayed to goddess Vajreshwari who is Parvati in her Aadi Maaya aspect and promised that he could conquer the fort and defeat the Portuguese, he would build a temple to the goddess. According to legend, goddess Vajreshwari appeared in the dream of Chimaji Appa and told him the way to conquer the fort. On the 16 May, the fort fell and defeat of Portuguese in Vasai was complete.

To celebrate his victory and to fulfill the vow taken in front of goddess Vajreshwari, Chimnaji appa ordered the new Subhedar (governor) Shankar Keshav Phadke to build the Vajreshwari temple. The temple' architecture is based on Bassein Fort.

The original temple of Vajreshwari was at Gunj, which is 8 km of the spot where Vajreshwari Mata temple stands today.

Did Gujarati king of Mahim build Babulnath Mahadev Temple?

Bhimdev II, who was also known as Raja Bimba ruled his kingdom from present day Mahim in Mumbai in the 11th Century. He is said to have come from Anahilwads-Patan in Gujarat. Other historians say that he came from the family of Deogarh-Yadava dynasty. Raja Bimbdev was a staunch worshiper of Somnath Mahadev.

The king originally built the Babulnath Mahadev Temple that for some reason fell into disuse. The original idols were accidentaly discovered by some devotees in 1600 and the Gujarati merchants in the area pooled their resources and rebuilt a temple to house the Shiva Linga, Ganesh, Hanuman and Parvati. The temple was expanded to its present size in 1890 by donations of merchants and a big donation from the Maratha king of Baroda Gujarat Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad.

Thus Maratha king of Guajarat helped rebuild a temple that is originally said to have been built by a Gujarati king of Maharashtra.

May Lord Babulnath Shiva bless us with knowledge, abundance and health. Har Har Mahadev! Jai Mata Di!

How Ambika rid Mumbai of the Mumbarkasur

Lost in the mists of time is a story of how Sri Mumbadevi, or 'Maha Ambe Aai' the Nagar Devi or the patron of the Patron Goddess of Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, manifested herself in Mumbai.

An asura name Mumbarka had so terrorized the poor residents of Mumbai that they prayed to Lord Brahma and asked him to liberate them from the excesses of Mumbarkasur. Lord Brahma than invoked the Goddess Mahaamba and from Lord Brahma's body manifested Mumbadevi who was armed with celestial wepons and whose face shone with a divine light.

When Mumba Devi appeared, Mumbarkasur fell at her feet and sought her forgiveness. He also requested her to assume his name. Mumba Devi agreed to do so and that is how she got her name. A grateful Mumbarkasur built a temple to the goddess, where she has been worshiped since ancient times by the Agris, Kolis and other original inhabitants of the island since time immemorial.

May Mahaambika Mumbadevi bless us with wealth, health, happiness and love.

Badrinath Temple in Mumbai

Mumbai is home to lakhs of Uttarakhandis many of whom migrated for a better living standard and thought they would return after a few years but after they grew new roots in Mumbai they became a part of the rich cultural tapestry of the city.

Inspire somewhat by nostalgia for the hills and also driven by devotion to Lord Badri Narayan, they have begun construction of a grand Badrinath temple at Vasai in the Mumbai Metropolitan region. The bhoomi poojan is done and the work is expected to be completed in over a year and a half.

The plan for the temple has been passed by the local authority and the temple will soon be opened to devotees.

Jai Badri Vishal! Jai Mata Di!

Bet you did not know this about Mumbai's Siddhivinayak Ganesh Temple

Siddhivinayak Ganesh Temple is the most visited non-Swayambhu temple in the world. Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, is probably the most popular deity among Hindus revered by all denominations of the Sanatan Hindu family.

The old Siddhivinayak temple was consecrated on Thursday, 19th November 1801 with the support of Late Mrs.Deubai Patil, a rich devotee of the Agri Samaj from Matunga who despite being childless prayed to Ganapati to grant the joy of motherhood to women who prayed to him for children.

The Lord answers the prayers of all who seek him with a pure heart and this has resulted in increasing number of devotees visiting the temple every year.

May the selfless example of Shrimati Deubai Patil and her devotion to Lord Siddhivinayak ignite the love for the apple of Parvati's eye in our heart! Om Gam Ganapataye Namah! Jai Mata Di!

Hail Mahashakti Frigga of Europe!

Friday gets its name from Goddess Frigga, who is Maa Jagadambe in the ancient Norse Parampara of Europe. The Anglo Saxons called her Frig, the ancient Germans Frija. She is known as Danu to the Celts and as Brigantia to the Greeks. Frigga's function was as the Goddess of time (Kalika), weather, married and motherly love, marriage, sexuality, parenthood and the bestower of children(Uma). Like Maa Shakti is the consort of Mahadeva Shiva, Frigga is wife of the most powerful Norse god Odin, the param-pita or all-father. Frigga's color is green which is also one of the colors associated with Devi in India.

In India, Friday is dedicated to Shakti, the mother goddess in Hinduism, and relates in particular to Goddess Lakshmi whose devotees wear red on the day and fast to please her. This fast is mostly observed for bringing joy and material well-being.

May Mahashakti Frigga usher love, abundance and health in the lives of all who seek the service of her feet. Jai Mata Di!

Jai Maa Chotila Chamunda!!

Maa Chotila is Goddess Chamunda the destroyer of the demons Chanda and Munda and her mool sthaan is the Surendranagar district of Gujarat near the city of Rajkot.

Maa in chotila are swayambhu, which means she has self-manifested. The idol is not man made.

The story is that a holy man had a dream in which he was told by Maa that she was under the earth on Chotilo hill.

He was instructed to dig in a certain spot and Maa would appear there, he did what he was told to do and they found the beautiful Chamunda Maa. At that spot the temple was consecrated and to this day the temple is still there.

In the last decade the temple has been renovated and the darshan hall has been extended the new steps and corrugated sheets above the steps have been provided by the Ambani brothers.

Many people say Chamunda Maa is twinlike or two sisters that is not true, the story is that Kario Bhil was a devotee of Chamunda Maa and was his kuldevi and he had promised Maa that if he begot a child he would make another image of Maa in chotila if his prayer was fulfilled.

Maa chamunda is very compassionate and listened to his prayer, over time he forgot about his promise and Maa gave him a test, he was caught stealing by the British raj and sentenced to jail. Why you wonder why a Bhakt of Maa was caught stealing.

Chamunda Maa had given him a shawl that when laid on the ground and sit on it  would transport him into the air, the reason he was given this was to pillage the ships of the british raj that was carrying gold, jewels and coins which they had taken away from indian rajas. He started to carry out Maa's wish and with this treasure he would sell it and feed the poor. One day he was caught due to Maa's lila and taken into jail. Maa appeared to him in a dream and reminded him of his promise. He woke up and apologized to Maa and said he would fulfill the promise, due to difficulty as he was now old Maa completed his promise and she self manifested a second image of herself in Chotila.
