Japanese Warkari completes her 30th waari of Vithoba this year

Yuriko Ikenoya, a follower of Gandhian Vinobha Bhave, commenced a study of the scriptures of the Warkari Vaishnava Sampradaya of Maharashtra that is centered around devotion to Lord Vithala (Shri Krishna) and his consort Mata Rukmini devi, after she became familiar with Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar through Vinoba's works.

Yuriko, who calls herself a pucca warkari, laments the increase in crowds and decrease in bhakti bhava. She feels the warkaris of old were more kattar in their observances.

Yuriko has been residing at the Pawnar Ashram in Vardha. Ikenoya has translated Vinoba's Bhagwad Gita into Japanese. She has also translated at least 1,000 abhangas by Tukaram.

Ganesh Gufa, where Lord Ganpati wrote the Mahabharata

Ganesh Gufa is located 100 meters from Mana village, in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, which is the last Indian village before the Indo-Tibetan border. Reaching the spot involves an uphill trek.

This is the spot mentioned in the Mahabharata where Maharishi Vyasa narrated the grant epic Mahabharata and where it was ditifully recorded in writing by the divine scribe Lord Ganesha on condition that Vyasa would not pause in his narration at any point. If Vyasa paused, Ganesha would abandon the task which was too huge for anyone in all the worlds.

Vyasa agreed and the Mahabharata came to be written.

May Lord Ganesha, the divine writer, write intellect, humility, knowledge and abundance in the book of our fortunes.

Dattatreya and Shiva in Western Africa

The trade between Africans and Indians is ancient. It is notable that the man who showed Vaco Da Gama the route to India was a Gujarati trader. Along with goods, ideas spiritual, scientific and religious were also exchanged since ancient times. Because the spiritual systems in India as well as Africa were non-Abrahamic (Not Jewish, Islamic or Christian), there was a free exchange of ideas and philosophies.

No wonder than that images and idols of some of the Gods of Hinduism have found their way to Western Africa from the 15th century onwards and are worshiped by the followers of Vodun to this day. These idols are considered of Gods of Vodun and continue to be worshipped to this day. Among the commonly worshipped are idols of Dattatreya, Shiva, Ganesha and those of Lakshmi and Durga.

Indian material culture in the form of images in books, pamphlets, films, and popular devotional chromolithographs (Bae 2003), as well as the votive practices of Indian traders in Africa, came to have a profound impact on Mami Wata worshipers, their icons, and their ritual actions.

Churches in Europe and USA become Hindu temples

Globally, Christianity is losing followers by the thousands and the reluctance of youths to become Christian priests and the falling number of parishioners is forcing several churches to shut down. Many of these churches are being bought by prosperous Hindus who are keen that their children do not lose touch with their Hindu spiritual roots.

An 80-year-old church was acquired for $1.3 million by Swaminarayan Maninagar Gaadi Sansthan (SMGS) in Dallas, US, last year.

SMGS has acquired five such old churches in Canada, the US and the UK. A fortnight ago, the sect acquired a 121-year-old heritage church building in Toronto, Canada for $1.6 million. While the building is now being converted into a temple-ashram, SMGS plans to retain carvings and glass paintings which are of great heritage value.
The SMGS has 12 temples abroad. Most of the churches acquired are situated in prime areas and in a run-down condition.

Jay Mata Mariamman Vietnam Wali!

Mata Mariamman

Mata Mariamman is a form of Durga who took the form of Kali. Her temple in Ho Chi Minh, the capital of Vietnam, was built to cater to the spiritual needs of 50 Tamil Chettiar trading families living in the city. Over the years thousands of Chinese and Vietnamese have benefited from the powers of Mariamman and today the temple is visited by more devotees from these communities than it is by Indians who are a miniscule minority in the Vietnam.

May Mata Mariamman of Ho Chi Minh City bless us all with intelligence, abundance and health!
