A Brahmin, Sri Bilvamangala
Thakura, was so attached to a prostitute named Cintamani that after performing
Shraddha for his deceased father he crossed a turbulent river storm on a stormy
night on a corpse. He found the gate locked and in the darkness he grabbed a
cobras tail mistaking it for a rope. Chinamani said that she was a mere bag of
flesh and bones. Had he sought Lord Govinda of Vrindavana with such fervor, he
would have gained supreme happiness.
Shocked by the words of the
prostitute, Bilvamangala Thakur set out for Vrindavana but found himself
attracted to a Brahmin’s wife on the way. Angry with himself, Bilvamangal
Thakur blinded himself and vowed to overcome lust through surrender to Shrimati Radha Rani and Lord Shri Krishna. After several years under his guru and the
grace of his guru, Bilvamangal Thakur became a perfect soul.
Bilvamangala Thakura’s work Krishna-Karnamrita continues to guide, illustrate
and inspire bhakti in all worshippers of the lord.
