Skanda Mata and Mother Yemaya in the
Nigerian tradition
Skandamata is Goddess Parvati in her
role as mother of Lord Skanda or Kartikeya. As Mata Rani is in her maternal aspect in this
manifestation, she is believed to be extremely beneficent to devotees who seek
her as Skandamata. Probably the best known depiction of the Divine Feminine as
Mother comes to us in the form of the depictions of Mother Mary with Jesus
among others.
The role of Supreme Mother in the
Yoruba tradition of Nigeria is fulfilled by Yemaya. Yemaya is the ocean, the
essence of motherhood, and a fierce protector of children. Yemaya is said to be
the mother of all Gods in the Nigerian IFA tradition.
