Navratri Festival Special 2013 - Did you know? - Part 7

Mata Kalratri - The ruler of the dead -Hel or Hela

Mata Kalratri – The ruler of the dead – Hel or Hela

Maa Kala Ratri is the seventh among the Navadurga. Kalaratri is the one of the fiercest forms of Durga who destroys all demons. Kaal Ratri is terrifying because she is death itself. Kaal means time. Ratri is night. The dark unknown period before we are born and the dark unknown that we return to is Kaalratri.

Mata Kalratri was present in old European Norse mythology as Hel or Hela, the goddess of the dead and queen of underworld. She can cause disease, decay and death. She, like Kaalratri does not merely represent death but is death itself.
